The Shaggy Mane Mushroom Identification (Coprinus comatus)

Shaggy Mane is a wonderful mushroom: great flavor and texture and is considered to be a functional food which means that it also has medicinal properties. It belongs to the coprophilous mushroom family which means that this mushrooms likes sh!t to grow on just like some other members of the same family.

Nutritional value

Shaggy mane mushrooms are low in calories and a good source of several important nutrients. Here are some of the nutritional values for shaggy mane mushrooms per 100 grams of fresh mushrooms:

  • Calories: 22
  • Protein: 3.1 grams
  • Fat: 0.3 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 1.1 grams
  • Fiber: 0.7 grams
  • Vitamins: Shaggy mane mushrooms are a good source of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, and B7.
  • Minerals: Shaggy mane mushrooms are a good source of potassium, copper, and selenium.

Habitat

The season for shaggy mane mushrooms varies depending on the location and climate. In North America, shaggy mane mushrooms can typically be found from late summer to fall, typically from August to November. In Europe, the season is generally from late summer to early winter, from August to December.

Shaggy mane mushrooms are typically found growing in meadows, lawns, and other grassy areas, often in clusters. They prefer moist soil and areas with plenty of sunlight. This mushroom should be collected when young (before it starts to liquefy).

Look-alikes

It’s important to exercise caution when foraging for wild mushrooms, as some species can be toxic or deadly if consumed. Here are some mushrooms that can be mistaken for shaggy mane mushrooms:

  1. Common Ink Cap (Coprinus stramentarius): This mushroom is similar in appearance to shaggy mane mushrooms when young, but as it matures, the cap turns black and the gills liquefy, earning it the nickname “alcohol inky”. It is not considered edible.

  2. Magpie Ink Cap (Coprinopsis picacea): This mushroom has a similar appearance to shaggy mane mushrooms when young, but it has a distinctive black and white pattern on the cap. It is also not considered edible.

  3. Parasol Mushroom (Macrolepiota procera): This mushroom is larger than shaggy mane mushrooms, with a distinctive bulbous base and a scaly cap. It is edible, but can be confused with poisonous lookalikes.

Preservation

Shaggy mane mushrooms have an extremely short shelf life and should be consumed in a couple of hours after harvesting. However, there are a few ways to extend their shelf life:

  1. Refrigeration: Shaggy mane mushrooms can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 hours. They will start to liquefy even in the fridge.

  2. Freezing: Shaggy mane mushrooms can also be frozen for later use. First, clean and slice the mushrooms, then blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Drain the mushrooms and spread them out on a baking sheet to cool. Once the mushrooms are cool, transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag and freeze for up to 6 months.

  3. Drying: Shaggy mane mushrooms can also be dried for longer-term storage. Clean and slice the mushrooms, then spread them out on a dehydrator tray or on a baking sheet in a warm, well-ventilated area. Once the mushrooms are dry and crisp, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to a year.

Cooking Shaggy Manes

Shaggy mane mushrooms are a delicious and versatile ingredient that can be cooked in a variety of ways. but one of the best way to feel its wonderful delicate flavor is sautéing the mushroom: Shaggy Mane mushrooms can be sautéed in a pan with butter, garlic, and herbs until they are tender and slightly browned. This is a simple and delicious way to prepare them as a side dish or to add to pasta dishes, omelets, or risotto.

It’s important to note that shaggy mane mushrooms should be cooked thoroughly before consumption. Additionally, some people may experience digestive discomfort after consuming shaggy mane mushrooms, so it’s best to start with a small amount to gauge your tolerance.
